I grew up surrounded by hyacinths in every color - dove white, blush pink, creamy blue, lavender, deep purple. My favorites were always the blue ones with slightly paler edges. They reminded me of the sky. Fragrant and bell-shaped, they blanketed the front entrance of my childhood home, wrapping around the circular walkway, ultimately climbing up the trellis to meet me near my bedroom. I would wake up to their delicate aroma, wafting through the window on birdsong, and know that it was a beautiful spring morning before I even opened my eyes.
These are an extraordinary flower to me. I have always felt a connection between us. My birthday and the time of peak bloom almost exactly coincide. We are always celebrating together. This year, unable to go outside and visit with them, I brought them to me. Incredibly grateful for the taste of spring they carried into my living room, I spent most of my birthday working with these magnificent blue florets. Playing and shooting with them until the photo captured part of me too.
Once I decided to photograph on my birthday, I knew that I would be working with hyacinths. There is something about them that soothes my soul. They take me back to some of my fondest memories, childhood birthdays, picnics in the front yard, my grandma, and the perfume she used to dab behind her ears.
There are layers of my history in this photo. The soft edges create a vignette that’s reminiscent of a memory. I hope that the stories in this flower art print rekindles a moment of appreciation for your own.
